I grew up very much a tom boy, and especially loved Technology. Being a child of the 80's and 90's meant I experienced a whole world emerging. That world that children these days purely take for granted and cannot even comprehend a life where computers and mobile phones did not exist in everyday life.
My first exprience began during Primary school in the very early 80's, around 1981/1982 when I was invloved in a project using a BBC computer.
I remember going into shops with my parents and brother desperately wanting a Nintendo that had come out, it came with a Robot that you could send off to do simple things. Unfortunatly, that stayed in the shop.
Then for one Chrsitmas I was given an Atari 2600 and my Geek life took off..It was mine! and only mine! I didnt have to share it with anyone! Games I fondly remember were Centipede, Grand Prix, Cubert and thankfully, I still have that very same Fully Working Atari 2600 along with all my games in my Attic.
My first ever full time job pay packet I spent on purchasing an Amiga 1200 from a second hand shop, which came with tonnes of games. I learnt a hell of a lot on this Amiga. With the help of my also Geeky Husband.
The geekiest thing I have ever ever done was drive to London all the way from Lancaster, with my Husband to attend a computer fair, where all we bought was a monitor and some cables for our Amiga. Have to admit, I did feel a little out of place there..
I even clearly remember Uni in 1994 when the "internet" was no more than Yahoo search at Stanford, and Gopher springs to mind too, but im not all that clear on that part of history...too much beer and all that...
Move on about 15years and here I am today even more Geeky only this time it involves Board games! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Board Games! Not the bog standard, Monopoly, cluedo, scrabble etc...but more along the lines of Hero Quest, Lords of Waterdeep and Garden Dice. Thankfully so far my collection is still small (need a bigger house before I can buy too big a boxed games!) Writing this, the games I own are:
Tahiti
Garden Dice
Army of Frogs
Colorette
Zooloretto Dice
Build an Ender God
and my Husband has Carcassonne
I'll be expecting this list to grow as my collection expands.
Im lucky enough to live a big UK city where theres plenty to keep Board Game enthusiasts entertained, Im part of a group that meet up every Sunday at a local venue and we sit for 4-5hours and play non stop board games! Its fantastic and you get to try out so many different games. Some of the games I've played so far are:
Pandemic
Tsuro
Lords of Waterdeep
Piece o cake
Ricochet Robots
7 Wonders
Lost Cities
Hanabi
Carcasonne
and a few others that have slipped my mind..
